C Dine Bar on the Kingston Foreshore are offering Buck-a-Shuck on Friday afternoons. That’s $1 oysters between 4-6pm (OMG how cheap?!) It’s also happy hour with $5 tap beer, $5 ciders and $5 selected wine. On a beautiful warm Friday arvo, who could resist hanging out by the Foreshore and $1 oysters. It was 5.30pm by the time I got there, and most of the outdoor tables were already taken.

C Dine have the oysters driven in fresh from Bateman’s Bay and shuck them every Friday. They had four oyster types you could choose from – raw, tempura, kilpatrick and mornay. I ordered 3 of each. This came out beautifully presented on a tear-drop shaped glass plate, with the oysters sitting on a bed of rock salt, a side garnish of salad and some lemon and lime wedges. I only had to wait about 15 minutes for them.

I started with the raw oysters and squeezed some lemon juice on them. I love raw oysters so the taste and texture don’t bother me at all. These were so fresh I was regretting not ordering more. The oysters mornay were very cheesy that the cheese overpowered the taste of the oyster. Great if you don’t like the taste! Too cheesy for me though. I thought the oysters kilpatrick were tasty with small slivers of bacon, but my partner would have preferred more Worcestershire sauce. The tempura oysters ended up being my favourite – the batter was crispy and not too fatty and could just be picked up and popped into your mouth. No hassle with the fork and potential juice squirtage on yourself or others. The best thing about these was the sauce! A honey and pepper sauce that had a tartness to it so I think it was mixed with some kind of light vinegar. WOW! I was literally holding the oyster shell with my pinkie finger up and drinking from it, hoping no one was watching. It tasted SO good. But I confess I love sweets so the honey went down very well.

I was mightily impressed with these fresh oysters. Even the salad garnish was drizzled in a nice olive oil and tasted great! Everything from the service, the location, the atmosphere and the presentation of the oysters was fabulous. The restaurant and outdoor tables were clean and wait staff dressed neatly. The bathrooms are in a little concrete alley behind the restaurant. The bathroom is shared with other restaurants such as Morks. Noise levels are low as everyone is just sitting outside relaxing, and there weren’t that many people there. As word gets around, I’m sure this will change.

12 oysters = $12. Very happy with that. Well worth it! 🙂
