I don’t get to go to Sydney often (even though its less than a 3hr drive from Canberra), but when I do, I make sure I try out a different restaurant/cafe.

This time, I decided to head to Ippudo for some ramen. Some friends had mentioned this was one of the best places to eat ramen after returning from a holiday in Japan. After recently coming back from holidaying in the US, and trying Momofuku‘s amazing steamed pork buns and shrimp buns, I just had to try it at Ippudo.

As soon as we walked in, all the Japanese staff welcomed us by shouting out simultaneously. The service was fantastic. We had multiple waitresses come up to us to make sure we were comfortable. Our main waitress asked if it was our first time there and when we said it was, she proceeded to explain the items on the menu which we really appreciated.

The buns were underwhelming. The slice of pork belly was small (though tasty) and the shrimp bun was a tiny piece of deep fried prawn. Very small serving in a big bun.

I decided on the akamaru tamago ramen – tonkotsu broth with a special miso garlic paste (red thing in the middle), pork belly, mushrooms, noodles and egg. Delicious! The broth was amazing and the miso garlic paste added that extra bit of flavour (not that it needed it).

My partner ordered off the season special menu – can’t quite remember the name but it was pork belly in a beef miso gravy-like broth, a lot thicker than my tonkotsu broth. I really liked this one too!

I’d definitely come back here for the different ramen you can get. Good value for money and so unbelievably mouth-wateringly tasty. You just can’t get this quality in Canberra.
